The Joint LSPEI / CBA PEI CLE Committee in collaboration with the CBA PEI Business Law Section are pleased to present “Taxation of Family Trusts and Intergenerational Transfers under Bill C-208” on Wednesday, May 24th, 12:00Noon, at The Holman Grand. Please join us for a continuing professional development presentation jointly hosted by Chris Arsenault, CPA, CA and Laura Simmonds, CPA, CA of MRSB Group covering the following tax-related topics:
- Planning opportunities that still exist for family trusts – this portion of the presentation will also include a review of (i) tax implications for settlors, beneficiaries, and certain common trust provisions; and (ii) an overview of the new reporting requirements for trusts.
- Corporate Attribution considerations when establishing a family trust – Corporate attribution rules are designed to prevent taxpayers from splitting income with spouses and related minors. Chris and Laura shall provide an overview of the corporate attribution rules, the tax implications resulting therefrom, and certain structures which can be used to avoid and/or minimize consequences of the corporate attribution rules.
- Overview of Bill C-208 – The relatively recent Bill C-208 governs the taxation of intergenerational transfers of shares of family small businesses, farms, and fishing corporations. In addition to reviewing the tax implications of Bill C-208, Chris and Laura shall also discuss what lawyers should keep in mind when documenting transfers to which Bill C-208 is applicable.
