Mid-Winter Meetings, CLE and Presidents' Dinner
Date: Friday, February 3, 2017
Location: Memorial Hall, Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown
The Law Society Call to Action Committee is tasked with ensuring that the Law Society of PEI responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Call to Action # 27, which reads:

"We call upon the Federation of Law Societies of Canada to ensure that lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.”

In the immediate term, the Committee will facilitate a training day on February 3, 2017, to engage the Law Society membership for the purpose of creating awareness and an understanding of the history and cultural legacy of the residential school system in Canada.  In the long term, the Committee will work towards the goal of mandatory annual cultural competency training that engages and educates the membership in the broader objectives set out in the TRC's Call to Action # 27. The Committee will undertake all activities with the engagement and direction of the leadership of the Indigenous People of PEI - the Mi'kmaq.
